Maine Hiking Letterbox in Bradbury State Park
Ten minutes NW of the huh-bub of Freeport is this gem of a State Park with a variety of trails leading to a 485 foot summit with views to the coast.
Take exit 20 off of I-95 (Route 136 out of Freeport) and follow signs to Pownal Center and Bradbury Mountain State Park on Route 9. The Park is open year-round with a small entrance fee.
Pick up a park map at the entrance booth and park in the main lot to the right. The map provides information on the difficulty of the various trails. You can choose your own route to the summit – we chose the quick way!
From the picnic area near the main parking lot we took the Summit Trail to the top of Bradbury Mountain. After enjoying the view, we turned SW and took the Boundary Trail to the spot where it makes a right hand turn at a stone wall and the South Ridge Trail enters from the left.
Take the South Ridge Trail 20 paces down to where it curves to the left and there is a twin-trunked, red blazed oak tree. Look for Maine Hiking behind the low stone wall, two stones to the left of the oak tree.
Continue down the South Ridge Trail, enjoying a view to the SW. This trail terminates at the Group Campsite area with a short walk back up the driveway to the main parking lot.
Don’t forget to look for the Bradbury Mountain box if you haven’t already done so.
Happy Hiking!
