Split Rock Lighthouse is one of Minnesota's favorite travel destinations. The lighthouse was in service from 1910 to 1969 when modern navigational equipment made it obsolete. The State of Minnesota obtained the scenic landmark in 1971 and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources now operates Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, a 2,200-acre state park that offers hiking, picnicking and tent camping to visitors.

To find our ode to this awesome landmark, follow Highway 61 north out of Two Harbors, Minnesota. Park at the Split Rock Scenic Overlook on the right side of the highway. If you get to the State Park, you have gone too far. Find the bicycle trail and follow it below the overlook toward the lighthouse. You will pass a yellow bike sign and the trail will descend. When you get to the fence on the right side of the trail, count 6 posts and stop. On your right, depending on the time of year, you may be able to see Split Rock Lighthouse, but look ahead across the path to your left and you will find the "split rock" you seek.
