*****This box has been pulled for maintenance*****

This letterbox is situated on the Buckeye Trail at Taylorsville Dam (part of Montgomery County's Five Rivers MetroParks) in Vandalia.

To get there from I-75, take the National Road exit in Vandalia east. The first park entrance on the left leads down to a parking area and some picnic tables.

From I-70, take the State Route 202 exit south to Taylorsville Rd. (White Castle) Turn right. Look for Bridgewater on the right. Take Bridgewater to the stop sign. Turn left on US 40 and look for the entrance down to a parking area and some picnic tables on the right.

A fairly unknown bit of history in Montgomery County: there is a ghost town sitting only about 1 1/4 miles north of US 40 in the Taylorsville Reserve by the name of Tadmor. In the mid-1800's it was very much alive and fed by the Miami-Erie Canal. Tadmor wasn't large (it had about 25 residences) but it had a post office/general store and was known as "The Crossroads of America" because the National Road intersected there. Tadmor's undoing was the flood of 1903. The townfolk deserted Tadmor when US 40 was rerouted to create the dam that sits there today. Not much is left of the place. There are foundations of a lock and a covered bridge as well as the canal boat towpath. The old utility poles still stand as well.

From the parking area, head to the paved path. Follow the path and pay no attention to the signs directing you to Tadmor or the Buckeye Trail. When you reach the welcome sign at Tadmor, stand on the 5.6 mile mark and head 190° to the old service road. Going east you will find the Buckeye Trail (blue blazes) intersects this road. Head south on the trail for 15 paces (a pace=2 steps or about 5 feet). You should be standing at a tree with a blue mark on your left. At 220° you should see a 5 trunked tree across trail about 2 paces away. In the center of the tree you'll find a cuddly critter. Now hop to it!!
