Box is in fine shape as of 10/15/06.

Please note that this letterbox is located on State Game Lands. As such, please use common sense and caution during hunting seasons. Also, this hike is of medium difficulty (our 6 year old could do it at a nice slow pace) and typically would take about 2 hours round trip. It is on the top of a mountain, so the climb is somewhat strenuous. Also, mid Spring to early Summer is deer fly season in Penn's woods - prepare accordingly.

The box is located at the top of Berry Mountain. From route 11/15 turn West on Cherry Road roughly 1 mile south of the junction with route 34. Proceed up the hill on Cherry Road about a quarter mile or so and bear left into driveway/grass parking lot of gamelands. Park and walk the mowed grass path towards the mountain. Turn right on the dirt road, down the steep hill and up the short hill - don't turn left here! After about 1/4 mile the dirt road does a gentle U-turn and begins to head up the mountain. Please note - after the tropical storm rains in the Summer of 2004 there are many significant washouts and very deep ruts in the roadway so do be careful - they have been repaired but the large stone used to repair it is still somewhat trecherous. When you get to the first set of electrical wires you are about 3/4 of the way there!

When you nearly reach the top you will see some HIGH tension wires - this is an astonishing engineering feat and I would recommend that you walk to the support poles to enjoy the view. These wires span the entire width of the Susquehanna for a distance of over one mile! From the southern most pole take a compass reading of 248 degrees magnetic and take 19 paces to the small tree (roughly 9" diameter). From this tree take 17 paces towards 162 degrees to a large stone with an overhang. Under this stone on the left hand side are several smaller stones and some leaves - your quarry lies here! Of course, stamp and return to its hiding spot.

If you would like, you may visit the cabin "Ashram" just up the hill. This quiet and peaceful abode is open and available for your enjoyment - but please treat with respect and care! I wouldn't recommend going on the deck - the stairs gave way in the past couple of years and the deck has some weakening support joists. You may also sign the guest book here and ponder the meaning of it all. Please note that this box is also the destination of several "Homing Pigeon" boxes...hitch-hikers that are designed to be delivered and left at this box for retrieval by me. If you find one of these "homing" hitch-hikers please leave it here and send me an email so I can retrieve it and re-release it! The final interesting note...this spot is so moving that a recent pair of boxers chose this site for the beginning of their united life...yes, he popped the question right up here and soon they will be boxing as one! I'm touched that someone found this destination an appropriate place to merge their journeys.

As always, please treat these areas with respect and care - don't litter and, if you see litter, take it with you. Enjoy!!
