Recently I was given Hope to plant by Tall Dave and ThimbeLinda. After locating a very appropriate hiding spot, I decided to add to the original name the words For Peace.

Yesterday, my son (Syrupiat)and I made our annual summer trek out west to dear ole' Greenfield and Mt. Greylock, our state's highest peak. As we strolled around the summit, we stopped to admire the MA Veterans War Memorial Tower. The 93 foot stone structure takes the form of a perpetually lighted beacon. It was built in 1931 to honor the state's deceased war heroes and heroines from World War I and future conflicts. The light at one time was the strongest beacon in Massachusetts, with a nighttime visible range of up to 70 miles. As we read the plaques at its base, it became quite clear to us that this was the right spot to place a box that honors Peace and those who preserve it.

From the parking area, proceed to the beacon standing for peace. Facing our country's flag, walk towards the topographic map. Follow the gravel/mowed path on your right leading into the woods. Find the quotes by Thoreau and Bascom. As you walk on, pass the first right hand path. Turn left at the next path. Stop and read John Ruskin's inspiring words about mountains. Behind you stands a multi-sistered tree shading the box and its rock. Stamp in at the picnic table a few feet further at the end of the path. Careful for hiking muggles. They're everywhere.

There is a year round $2 parking fee.
