9-10-04 THIS LETTERBOX IS MISSING AND WILL BE REPLACED, CHECK BACK BEFORE STARTING.

The first in the water letterbox can be found in Coldwater, Mi. Coldwater can be found from highway I-69 exit 13. After the exit head west on US 12. For about a mile. Past McDonald’s you will come to a traffic signal in front of the hospital, this will be Sprague St. turn south here. Continue South on Sprague until you cross the Railroad tracks. As soon as you cross the tracks turn left on Sauk river rd. (going around the block takes you back to US 12.). On the South side of the road you will see a small pond (in winter you may want to bring your ice skates), after you pass it park along the side of the road. You are now in Coldwater’s Waterworks Park. The following clues should bring you to Coldwater’s first letterbox and the first letterbox placed by the Hydrohykers@Yahoo.com.

Terrain: Easy walking, wheelchair & stroller friendly
Distance:approximately 1/2 mile.
Time: approximately 40 min.
Status: Active

CLUES:

A compass might be handy, and in wet weather the ground gets a little soggy.

When you exit the car head south, when you reach the water head downstream. You will cross a causeway on which there is a bridge, count the planks that make up the bridge, and count the number of upright posts from both sides; you will need this number later. After crossing the bridge continue to follow the water to the west.

You will need to cross over the road. After crossing the road, continue to follow the water for some distance, enjoy the ducks and squirrels as you walk.

Take heed of the 2 signs warning of deep water. When you reach a dam/ waterfall, across the water turn to the North, take a turn on the slide if you are not afraid of heights, cross the East/West road and stay to the East side of the North/South road.

After crossing the road go 73 steps. on the right side you will see a plaque of dedication of the park. Note the Post number of the American Legion that presented it. You will need this number later. From the plaque take a heading of 140*. follow this heading back to the water. Now you will go the way of the Spawning Salmon. Follow the water to the first place to cross over it. As you cross over count the planks and the uprights from both sides record these for use later.

After you have crossed the bridge, turn east you will cross the road again. You will now find yourself in a different part of the park, enjoy the view. Continue on the dirt path to the east most point of the drive. A sign which instructs the reader not to park on the grass, but you won’t be parking so continue East to the largest tree in this part of the park.

From this tree set a bearing at the total number from the first bridge planks & posts plus the American Legion post number, round this total down to the nearest decade. This bearing will take you to an Oak tree. From this tree double the bearing number you just used to get here and take this bearing.

Head on this bearing, take the number of steps equal to the number of planks from the second bridge. You will find yourself at the edge of the woods; continue on the same bearing, the number of steps equal to the number of posts on the second bridge.

You will see a medium size downed tree. Here is where you will find what you seek. After stamping and replacing the box make your way safely back to your car.

While this is not literally “in the water” you have reached Coldwater’s “First” letterbox.
