UPDATE: Missing as of 8/27/13 - will try to replace soon.

The Strawberry Short Course Festival was started in 1980 and was discontinued about 15 years later. After almost 20 years, in 2013, the Strawberry Short Course Festival at Mt. Hood Community College was brought back by popular demand! The festival was named by a former MHCC employee, Millie Butterfield, in a contest. Did you know that Mt. Hood Community College was built on what used to be strawberry fields?

This great community event welcomes kids, adults and families to celebrate the strawberry season by sampling short courses on fun and interesting topics, taught by both staff and community members. It’s a time to come and enjoy a variety of vendors and booths from local organizations and strawberry shortcake. It will be an annual event every strawberry season.

For some, the Strawberry Short Course is their first introduction to the Community College. The campus is full of other amenities for community members. Visit by entering the campus on the 257th “E” Entrance. You’ll see the fountain in bloom to the right. Find yourself a parking space and meander to the flagpoles by the fountain.

You’d expect the letterbox to be at the “box” office, but what you’ll find here are tickets for our Performing Arts and Studio Theaters (www.mhcc.edu/theatre).

Climb downstairs and you’ll see something from another planet, a solar charging picnic table (purchased by the Student Government Association in June, 2013) and the Planetarium. Check out the Planetarium Sky Theater schedule (www.mhcc.edu/planetarium).

If you want to enjoy the outdoors, there’s plenty of ground to explore at MHCC. Pass the waterfall and take the vine to the right. Get to the root of the stairs and head left. At the blossom in the sidewalk, follow the shoot to the right and creep downhill, the trailing vine sidewalk circles around past the tunnels. Retreat a couple steps back and admire the growth around you. You’ll find the letterbox planted in its berry happy home.

Grab a map and explore the rest of the campus (http://www.mhcc.edu/About.aspx?id=).
