A family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus from New Mexico to California. When the van's clutch breaks early in the trip, the family discovers that they must push the van until it reaches 20 miles per hour and then run and jump in.
One of the scenes filmed here was the pushing of the VW bus to jump start it. The scene at the repair garage was also filmed here. The garage is no longer standing...but the box is planted where the garage was.
Clue to box:
Travel on Hwy 138 (Pearblossom Highway) to E Avenue T 8.
Turn onto Ave T 8 and turn south onto the dirt road that parallels Hwy 138.
Count 10 telephone poles south on your right, starting at Ave T 8.
Stay to the right on the road after 9 poles.
Park just past pole #10 at the start of the clearing.
DO NOT DRIVE FURTHER...possible tire damage from debris in area of clearing. This is where the garage once stood.
Walk to southeast edge of clearing where 2 Joshua trees stand close together. (You're almost directly in line with pole #12)
On east side of Joshua under cement.
