Most canals were constructed for transporting people and goods from one place to another. This canal was unusual in that its primary purpose was to generate power to run mills and contribute to industrial growth in the community where it was situated.

Once you have located the marker explaining the canal’s history, go upriver and cross the walkway over the dam. Follow the path between the two watercourses; one natural and the other man-made. You will first encounter a downgrade in the path bringing it down closer to the level of the water. This is a favorite fishing spot for the locals. Next, you will see several trees growing in the middle of the path. Then you will see a waist high stump on the right side of the path that is hollow nearly down to ground level. Approximately 35 steps (footfalls) past this stump is a slightly crooked tree growing right next to the path on the left side. On the other side of the tree are two holes. The object of your search is at the bottom of the upper one, concealed by rotted wood and leaves.

If you reach the bridge, you’ve gone too far.

• No ink included; bring your own. Black is recommended.
• It is strongly advised that you wait for a succession of dry days before attempting this box; the path gets extremely muddy and slippery after it has rained.
• Keep an eye out for joggers and bikers.
• Please rehide well, making sure the box cannot be seen by anyone looking into the hollow.
