In Search of Chuck Straub

This series of boxes has been placed in honor of Mr Chuck Straub of Mansfield CT. Chuck has a whole series of well-done letterboxes that start with "In Search Of..." and refer to mythical or legendary creatures. Chuck himself has become quite legendary in Eastern Connecticut and we felt his accomplishments should be recognized in some form. Enjoy, and thank you Chuck!! (and Chickabirdee, and their dog Molly!)

Note: Second box missing....will recarve and replace shortly!

Directions: This 2-box trek is located on the Airline Trail in Hebron / Amston, CT. Just south of the Junction of Route 85 and Route 207, you will find Route 85 Lumber. The parking lot for this section of Airline Trail is located next to the lumber yard. Pull into the large gravel parking lot and find the map board.
Time: 45 minutes
Distance: 1.5 miles (? not confirmed)

Clues: From the mapboard, turn left and hop on the old railroad bed, following it generally West/South-West. Conduct your train past the back of the lumber yard and behind some private residences. Continue down the trail past the brown "10 Mile" marker. Just past the marker pick up a spur trail on the left, bearing 095 degrees. This trail will pass a pond on the right and merge with another trail. Continue on this trail passing the old factory pond, the smoke stack, and stay to the right as the well worn path re-enters the woods. As you enter the woods intself, count 22 paces (left footfalls only!). Site in the smoke stack to a reading of 046 degrees and then look behind you to find an old railroad tie. Molly Searching for Chuck is located under this railroad tie -- check the end farthest from the trail. Stamp in and please use the flat granite rock to cover this box well!

Continue up the trail bearing 359 degrees. Pass a pond on the right and bear left at the "V" to follow the road more travelled (should be a bearing of 320). As you re-find the main trail, turn right. At the first hint of civilization peeking through the trees, spy a large stone wall to the left of the trail. Find the end of the wall closest to the trail and note a suspicious looking rock tumbled by the waves. Behind / Above this rock you will find Chuck, riding in his locomotive on the abandoned rail-line! (MISSING!)

Returning your caboose to the roundhouse should be as easy as taking a few steps up the trail....
