This letterbox is hidden at The Holden Arboretum by the Holden Education and Public programs Department.
Holden’s address is 9500 Sperry Road in Kirtland, Ohio. Directions can be found at www.holdenarb.org. The Holden Arboretum is a private, non-profit institution and does have an entrance fee of $10 for adults, $4 for youth 6-18, and free for children 5 and under.
Once you arrive at Holden, pay the admission fee and stop in at the visitor center to get a trail map. This trail is 1.5 miles long (3 miles round trip, if you decide to walk the entire trail). The walking terrain is moderate. Bole Woods consists of mature beech-maple trees, plus a variety of different plant and animal life.
From the Visitor Center, walk to the far east side of the parking lot, towards Corning Lake. Once you get to Corning Lake, stay to the left side, and walk on the grass trail next to the lake. This is the Highlights Trail.
Once you see the sign for Bole Woods (and Green Shelter), take that trail. You are now on the Bole Woods Trail. Keep walking towards Sperry Road, and once you get to Sperry, walk across the road. After crossing the road, you will come to a V intersection. You want to turn right, and continue straight when you see the Bole Woods Trail marker. The forest you are walking into is Bole Woods.
On the trail, you will see a bridge ahead of you. Cross the bridge and continue on the trail. After walking about a ¼ of a mile, be on the lookout for another Bole Woods Trail marker, with a yellow stake next to it as well, reading “S B 4”. These will be on the right (south) side of the trail. Once you have located these markers, go around the curve you see ahead of you and continue walking.
On the left hand side of the trail you will find a tree that is composed of 4 trucks that come together at the base. The tree is about 20 feet off the trail. Walk off the trail to the side of the tree away from the trail. Look about six feet off the ground in the tree. The box is inside the opening in the tree. If you come to the next Bole Woods Trail marker on your right you have gone too far.
When you are finished, you can continue walking the rest of Bole Woods Trail, or follow the directions back the way you came.
Please be discreet and make sure no one sees you getting the box or putting it back. Please contact the name and number on the box if there are any questions or concerns.
Enjoy the rest of your stay at The Holden Arboretum.
