I love Spokane's abundance of lilacs. In fact, it one of the things that I miss most about Eastern WA now that I live in Seattle. The rhodenderons are beautiful and everywhere, but nothing quite compares to the smell of lilacs in the spring.

Driving Directions:
Approaching from the East (downtown Spokane), go West on Second Avenue to Sunset Highway. Continue West on Sunset Highway past Government Way to just before 'F' Street. The sign and entrance to the Arboretum are located on the left-hand (South) side of Sunset Highway.

Park in the main lot at Finch Arboretum. Check out the map on the board by the parking lot or pick up a portable version inside by the bathrooms. Head out toward the lilac section. Stop in at the enormous old white willow and spend some time playing around on it's massive branches and just taking in the arboretum. When you've had your fill of sensory delights, take a compass reading. Head out at 160 degrees for 29 steps from the roots of Old Man Willow. Look underneath the flat rock hiding beneath the branches of "SYRINGA 'SABELLA LILAC 28" Don't forget to rehide well after you stop and smell the lilacs!

Hike length: 0.5 miles total
Recommended colors: Purple, of course :)
