Fireworks exploded overhead illuminating and delighting those gathered for the 2013 Fourth of July celebration in downtown Columbia. Many in the audience kept to themselves and watched in anticipated silence. One child, though, was so enthralled that the experience was punctuated with an occasional "Pow!" or "Boom!" These were perfect examples of onomatopoeia, or words that imitate the sounds they describe.

To find the letterbox / geocache, start by following this link to a YouTube video. Each sound is an onomatopoeia of some kind and can consist of a single letter (one exception requires a pair of letters). Identify each and link them with their associated numbers. For example, if Sound 5 is similar to the letter "m", 5 = M. Using this information, decrypt the following instructions:

6 7 8 12 4 7 6 5 6 13 6 13 4; 2 12 1 6 7 6 3 12 9 10; 9 12 7 11 6 7 2 2 5 7 2 1 3 11 13 8 12 9 6 11 12 12 13 9 4 7 6 5 7 6 2 12 1 6

As there are a number of sharp drops along the trail, this letterbox is only available during daylight hours. Start at the parking area for Capen Park just off Rock Quarry Road south of Stadium Boulevard. (More information on Capen Park can be found here.) Locating the container should be fairly easy. Watch out for wildlife (snakes, spiders, ticks, etc.) and the occasional poison ivy. Please replace the cover as it was discovered!

Permission to place this letterbox was provided by Lida Gouchenour of the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department.
