Serpent Mound
Note: This letterbox is not located on Serpent Mound State Memorial or National Historic Landmark property.
Prepare for poison ivy.
The Great Serpent Mound is a 1,348-foot-long, three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound built by the Fort Ancient people around 1070 CE. Serpent Mound is the largest serpent effigy in the world.
Enter the Serpent Mound complex and park in the parking lot. This is normally a fee area, and the fee is well worth visiting this amazing place. However, if there is no one in the outer gatehouse, and you are not planning to enter the museum & tower, and not planning to see the serpent mound itself, you can probably get by without paying the OHS entry fee (which is paid in the museum).
Once you’ve parked your car, locate the women’s rest room. Head east past the lone “Adena Burial” mound. You will find a Buckeye Trail marker with the trail’s characteristic blue blazes.
Just to be clear, this box is a SHORT walk from the parking lot.
Follow the Buckeye Trail east past the open area until you are among trees. You will pass some sort of modern in-ground structure as you go.
Continue along the Buckeye Trail. You will encounter some overhead wires—telephone or electrical wires—in an open area. (It'll be the first set of wires you walk under.) Take 40 more steps along the Buckeye Trail. There will be a medium sized tree with some blue blazes on it immediately on your left, with a clump of 3 trees about 4 steps behind it. The letterbox is behind this clump of trees. This is a 2-sided stamp. NOTE: when we checked on this on Aug 6, 2020, this clump had become significantly overgrown with weeds. But the box is there.
If you’ve come to a wide open field, you’ve gone too far and you will need to count 17 paces back. And if you come to a road, you've gone 2 widen-open spaces too far! This box is a short walk from the parking lot.
