Who Let the Dogs Out of Puppyville?
There is an area in the Quabbin known as Puppyville. According to a local historian the name Puppyville was applied to it because "it is said that a man once lived there who had a lot of puppies". You will pass Puppyville on this walk.
Take Route 202 to New Salem. Once on 202, take a turn onto Shutesbury Road and follow it to Quabbin gate 22 (at one point you will come to a fork in the road, go left on the dirt road). Go around the gate and walk down the road for about 20 minutes or so. You will come to a wide path at a turn marked by a sign on a tree that reads 22-3.
Look behind the tree with the sign to find box #1 Bella.
Take the right turn along that path keeping your eyes peeled to the right side of the trail until you see a multi-layered shelf rock on the right. Box #2, Zeus, is behind that rock on the right.
Continue down the path, keeping your attention to the right side of the path until you see a large pine in front of a stone wall. Box #3, Tuukka, is behind that pine.
Now continue to the end of the trail. You will come to the spot where the Millers River converges into the Quabbin Reservoir. Look to the right for a cluster of large rocks in a group of trees on high ground. Look for Box #4, Bernie, next to to the Beech tree growing out of one of the rocks.
Return to your car the way you came in.
