This series was created by high school students from the 2013 English Language Learner (ELL) Summer Camp at Marlborough High School. The students found the letterbox “Joey’s Rock” at Holt’s Grove to introduce the concept of letterboxing. Then they went on a field trip to Purgatory Chasm and found many other letterboxes throughout the park. After finding letterboxes and practicing reading, writing and following directions the students had a lot of fun making and mapping this series. ENJOY!

To get to the beginning, enter the driveway to Marlborough High School (431 Bolton Street, right next to the Navin Ice Rink). Follow the long driveway past several athletic fields. Take a right just past the tennis courts and enter the "loop" to park. (Please note, if this is during school hours, cars are not allowed to enter this loop.)

Start your journey at the main entrance to the high school, looking at the bus loop. Turn left towards the stone wall and walk up the hill between the stone wall and the fire hydrant. Count 85 steps to the big panther paw and follow the path past the orange shack.

At the intersection turn left but walk on the grass along the baseball field fence to the foul pole. At the foul pole you will see a path. Follow the path from for 80 steps from the foul pole to a boulder in the path. On the right you will see a pair of twin trees and 6 sister-trees. Walk between the trees over a small hill to a row of big rocks. At the first one, under a small rock and some leaves, you will find our first “Summer Fun” letterbox.

Walk back to the boulder in the path that you came from and down the hill.

On the right you will see a huge boulder and a fallen tree. Turn right onto the path and go to the boulder. A big tree grows leaning against the rock. Between the rock and the tree you will find the second “Summer Fun” letterbox.

Go back to the path, again.

Continue on the path up the “hands and knees” hill. Be careful! Follow the black fence straight ahead towards the school. You will see a birch tree looking at you, turn left. Go opposite the arrow and down the stairs. On the third step down, take the unmarked path on the left to the “twisted rope” tree hugging a straight tree. Under the trunk of the straight tree you will find the final “Summer Fun” letterbox.

*To return to the high school:
Follow the steps to the sidewalk and turn left. Follow the sidewalk to the paved path on the right by the baseball field and retrace your steps.

UPDATE: We have been informed that boxes #2 and #3 are now missing. In addition, box #1 is damaged and missing the log book. As the students who placed the boxes are no longer involved in the program, it is being archived. Sorry!
