This letterbox is a memorial to Lee Evans. Lee was married with three young sons when he passed away at age 34. He supported his family as a tinkerer (peddler). He had an old Motel T truck that was loaded down with food staples (flour, sugar, coffee, etc), household items (pots, pans, knives, etc), yard goods (muslin, flannel, gingham, calico, etc), and small farm implements (hoes, shovels, hammers, etc). He made stops at all the homesteads in and around Corsicana, bringing not only supplies but news from the outside world. If his customers couldn’t pay in cash he would trade his goods for produce and whatever his young family couldn’t use he’d sell in Corsicana to restock his truck with supplies. Lee Evans was known far and wide as “Ten Cent Evans” because he always worked it out so he made ten cents profit on all his sales.

Directions to box: From Hwy 31 turn East on Cemetery Road, lots of potholes. When road curves to the left park on side street. (31.894513,-96.721441). Walk straight ahead down the road to marker for Swink on the left side of road. Turn right walking along tree row. After last tree, continue for four more rows to Lee (10 cent) Evans. Turn left to plot surrounded by cement border. At cement divider go left past tree. Box is in the corner of the cement in front of the tree under SPOR.
