During a period of economic downturn in the country, a successful business or two have been closed permanently due to corporate downsizing and other unforeseen circumstances. One such business is Mervyn's Department Stores. Mervin G. Morris founded the first Mervyn's store in San Lorenzo, California on July 29, 1949. The store was supposed to be named Mervin's, but the architect suggested that a spelling with a "Y" instead of an "I" would be more visually appealing. In October 1975, the chain expanded to southern California, opening stores in Fullerton and Huntington Beach.

The "Open, open, open" mantra came from an old Mervyn's ad campaign in the spring of 1992 with a woman standing in front of their store before it opens. She is looking through the glass door and saying "Open-open-open" as she opens and closes her hands. The sale was starting the next morning. She stood there, in front of the door, willing it to open, and chanting, yes, "Open, open, open." It was an even tempo: "O-pen-o-pen-o-pen."

Signs of financial distress and possible bankruptcy surfaced on July 21, 2008. At the time of this announcement 3 stores had just held grand openings only a few months prior to being told they would soon close.

The Fullerton location closed in December of 2008.

From Imperial Blvd. turn at Mervyn's Drive and into the Mervyn's parking lot.

Drive east and park as close as possible to the island with 2 trees. It is the closest one to the railroad tracks and the back end of Supercuts.

Look at the base of the tree on the right (facing north) under leaves on the east end of the island.

As always please try to return the box to where you found it and replace the leaves, detritus, debris, etc., back over the box. I'm listing this as a limited time box as I am hopeful that things will turn around and this location will once again be home to a thriving business.
