ZZ Top, that Little Ol' Band From Texas, was formed in 1969 in Houston from rival psychedelic bands, the Moving Sidewalks, featuring guitarist Billy Gibbons, and the American Blues, with bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. The band's first two albums reflected their blues roots and Texas sense of humor as they struggled to build on their success as a local and regional act. Their influences included Jimi Hendrix, Howlin' Wolf and Elvis Presley as they molded themselves into the quintessential Texas boogie band. Their first album came out in 1970, followed by "Rio Grande Mud" in 1972. But their best known album, "Tres Hombres", came out in 1973 and became the first one to go gold with classic songs like "Waitin' For The Bus", "Jesus Just Left Chicago" and their signature riff tune "La Grange". It seemed appropriate, therefore, to place this microbox in the town of La Grange. Since the "Chicken Ranch" no longer exists, I settled for putting it in Monument Hill State Historic Site.
Directions:
La Grange is about 100 miles west of Houston via I10 and Hwy 71. From the La Grange Business District, take Hwy 77 south across the Colorado River, and .4 mile on Spur 92 west to the park entrance.
Clues:
From the visitor center, walk west along the Interpretive Trail to the tomb and monument dedicated to the Texans involved in the "Black Beans" incident. Then continue to the scenic overlook across from the Kreische Home and enjoy the view. Continue on the path north for 38 steps, crossing under the branch of a tree. On your left you will be at the end of a stone wall and the beginning of a cable fence. Walk around the stone wall between it and the cable fence, crossing under the branch again. The microbox lies hidden in a crevice about 4 feet from the end on the third level of stones from the ground behind some small stones. Please re-cover well.
