John Sessums was the first African American member of the Houston Light Guard, the first uniformed militia company in post-reconstruction Houston. Sessums joined the guard during the late 1870s and served for over 50 years as its only drummer. He later led several additional African American drill companies and became known affectionately as "Captain" Sessums. He died in 1928 and was buried in College Memorial Park Cemetery, where this box can be found.

Directions:
From I10 go south on Shepherd to W. Dallas. Go left for about 0.2 mile to gravel road into cemetery on the right. Turn right into cemetery, then take first right. Go past Rev. Yates' historical marker on left and drive left at curve toward back. Stop when you see the historical marker on the right for John Sessums.

Clues:
Walk to historical marker then go left 45 steps. Go right to a double-trunk tree by fence. Minibox is within trunks under a rock and leaves.
