One of 3 Letterboxes installed and maintained by Girl Scout Troop 73083, in Honor of Weston’s 300th Celebration
(Historic references: Walks On Conservation Land, Weston, MA by Elmer E. Jones, 1999; and Farm Town to Suburb, The History and Architecture of Weston, MA, 1830-1980 by Pamela W. Fox, 2002.)

As the name suggests, there two hilltops of Doublet Hill. The western summit, on private land, is just over 360 feet above sea level, and is the highest point in Weston. This walk goes over the eastern summit, and is only a few feet lower (356ft) than its partner hilltop.
1. Park at the end of Doublet Hill Road. Please respect driveways and parking signs. Walk toward the water tower, around the gate, and onto the Weston Forest & Trail (WFT) trail. The large, green water tower (constructed in 1931) will be in front of you to the right. Proceed on the trail, keeping the water tower on your right. You will pass a large boulder almost sitting directly on the trail.
2. With the large, green water tower on your right, follow the trail along level ground about 25 yards. You will come to a place where the trail splits. Take the left trail to the southeast. [Don’t take the trail that goes straight, between two large boulders]. Then after only 10 yards, take the first trail on the right. It heads south, uphill over rock and boulder-strewn ground.
3. Proceed uphill to the V-d Oak tree. Continue uphill looking for a rock face. Stay on the trail.
4. Facing southeast, climb the rock ledge in front of you. You will see a large boulder sitting at the top on the left. Continue along the trail, look for the very faint, white X that marks the Doublet Hill summit (about 30 yards beyond the boulder).
5. Still no view of Boston! From the faint white X that marks the Doublet Hill summit, continue southeast, generally following the exposed rock ridge. Stay on the WFT trail, following signs. [Do not take the WFT trail that goes off to the left, back downhill to the north]. Continue until you reach a lone, large cedar tree.
6. Glimpses of the Boston vista can be seen through the trees. Head southeast to the final clearing for Boston skyline views.
7. Almost There! Facing east you can see a view of the Boston skyline. Move so you can clearly see the buildings, unobstructed by trees. To your right find two trees, standing in amongst rocks. Walk to the base of the tree marked with a WFT sign. Two rocks lean together at its base, creating a sanctuary for your treasure. Please return the protective “door” as you found it!
Just over the summit, a five minute walk down the hill to the south (away from Doublet Hill Road and your car) is the Weston Aqueduct. It was built in the early 1900s to carry water via gravity from Wachusett Reservoir to Boston. At that time, a hand laborer was paid 50 cents a day, and a laborer with a horse was paid 5 dollars a day. In the 1990s it still carried 15% of MWRA water. It has now been phased out of regular use.

Thank you for trying our letterbox hike! Please help us keep it in good condition for the next visitor.
