From the outside the Painted Churches of Texas look like many American country churches, but cross the threshold and you'll encounter a profusion of color. Built by 19th century immigrants, these churches transport the visitor back to a different era, a different way of life. Inscriptions on the walls read not in English, but in the mother tongue of those who built them: German and Czech. There are over 15 of these churches, most in the Schulenburg area, and they can be visited on your own or by tour. This box honors St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, built in 1908, and can be found at the nearby St. Mary Cemetery.

Directions:
From Hwy 290 go southwest on Orange Street 1 block, then right on West San Antonio Street to St Mary Catholic Church on the right. For the letterbox, go back to Hwy 290 and turn left for 0.7 mile, then right on Kay Street for 1 block. Turn left on West Austin Street for 0.2 mile then right on Catholic Cemetery Road to St. Mary Cemetery on the left. Drive through main gate in middle by flag all the way to the back, turn right and park.

Clues:
Find the rock wall in front of you along back of cemetery and follow it 35 steps, going around a stone building, to a large Magnolia tree. Look behind wall next to green pole for minibox under a rock and leaves.
