I WISH I WAS IN HAWAII #4 – SURF’S UP!

Start your search at the intersection of Route 169 and Route 101 by the Pomfret Community School. Proceed West on Route 101. At the first intersection, (in about .4 of a mile) Route 101 becomes Route 44. Continue west (straight) on Route 44 about .8 of a mile, and go right onto Babbitt Hill Rd.

In a very short distance, (.2 of a mile) there is a beige, stucco house that sits back from the road on your right. The next mailbox is #186. Immediately park on the right after the mailbox. The Airline Trail, (part of the East Coast Greenway) crosses the road here. The letterbox is on the right side section that runs along the side of the stucco house

Walk past the green gate, along the straight section of trail for 2 or 3 minutes, then around the first curve. Continue walking a very short distance and you will see a large “spooky”, many branched, Oak tree about 50 feet off the trail on your right. Stay on the trail and in about 25 feet you will see a tree on your right with strong vines wrapped around it. (There have been other trees with vines on them, but this is the first one 25 feet past the oak.) Then in another 20 feet or so you will see a small stone cairn at the right side edge of the trail. Look up the right bank. There is a tree with a round stump about 2 feet tall that looks like a piece of a telephone pole in front of it. The box you are searching for is between the stump and the tree, behind a flat stone.

When you are done stamping, return the box to its hiding place, putting the stones back on both sides of it, and make sure it cannot been seen from either side.

We hope you enjoyed looking for “SURF’S UP” and that you will eventually try to find the whole series. Box 1 and 2 are planted in Ashford along Route 44 on the Natchaug Trail. Box 3 is also in Pomfret on another section of the Airline Trail. We plan on this being a series of 8 boxes.
Thanks for looking. Please let us know if you find the boxes and if they are in good condition or need of attention.
