NOTE: BOX REMOVED FOR REPAIR ON 12/9/2010 -- WILL BE REPLACED SHORTLY. THANKS AND SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

SOME POETIC CONTEXT, TO GIVE YOU SOME CLUES.
DIRECTIONS TO FOLLOW, SO DON'T GET THE BLUES.

This place was originally packed in its day,
with people from here and real far away.

They came here to work and to serve the U.S.
Now the roads are all bumpy, most buildings a mess.

There are animals here, though most of them wild.
Be careful at night, man, woman and child.

There's museums and restaurants and golf if you like.
Some drive or walk here, but it's best on a bike.

In a place where the sunrise hits a sandy shore,
you'll view boats, bridges, a village and more.

There are miles of shoreline hidden away,
but watch where you walk, or a fine you will pay.

It's a place you can get to by land, sea or air.
It's SO worth the trip, because our letterbox is there.

There are a few details we'd like to reveal,
but as times change, they may no longer be real:

+ considered rundown, it has many quirks: an airport, a ferry,
and submarine works.

+ no traffic except for maybe two times a year: on the Fourth of July
and when the Blue Angels are here.

+ a Buggy Shield needed along the main road,
'Punch Buggy Heaven' -- here's where they unload.

+ Calf Pasture Point and Dogpatch Beach,
are beautiful places, but not easy to reach.

+ Of course there is politics involved with a fight.
They're more worried about taxes than what's wrong or what's right.

+ Environmentalists worry about what's buried below,
Is it toxic and leaking? We don't really know.

+ The Devil's footprint is nearby on a rock,
though some say that that folklore is simply all talk.

+ No Potato Head statue, too much of a fee,
But the people from here are proud of a bee.

We think that it's time for our poem to end.
Come find our letterbox and please tell a friend.

DIRECTIONS

The NCBC Letterbox is located in the former Naval Construction Batallion Center, Davisville, Rhode Island. It is now the QPD Industrial Park. It is off of Route 1 (Post Road), in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Davisville and Quonset Point are under construction, and the entrance is liable to change daily. There are two main roads in QPD, Davisville Road and Quonset Road. Once in the park, try to get onto Davisville Road.

Follow Davisville Road East, past the pipe yard on your right, past parking lots full of imported cars, to the stop sign at the end. Turn left onto Allens Harbor Road. About 1/4 mile down Allens Harbor Road, there is a fork, with a sign for the Allen's Harbor Marina in the middle of the fork. Bear left and immediately pull off the road to your left and park beside two rusty metal pipes standing vertically about waist high on your left.

Walk about 100 feet along the brush on the left side, with the water on your left, and stop when you are perpendicular to a low stump. The stump will be about 30 feet to your right. Continue in the same direction as you've been going ten paces and look for a single cedar (evergreen tree), between two clumps of cedars. The single cedar is the closest to the water.

At the base of the cedar tree is a wooden beam. Look carefully around the base of the tree for the NCBC letterbox. When you are done, please replace it carefully and securely.

NOTE ADDED 6/29/04: We received a comment that the area is quite overgrown, including some poison ivy. We checked out the box, and it is correct that there is a good bit of overgrowth this time of year. However, there is a recognizable 'path' of sorts through the underbrush to the water/evergreen, consistent with the directions, and we were able to navigate between the poison ivy o.k. last weekend. The box has been active with others as well. If you want to try this, we suggest long pants, or, if you are very concerned about poison ivy, maybe wait until the Fall? It is a nice ride anytime, and you can visit Allen Harbor and the water even if the box can't be accessed.

NOTE ADDED 5/21/2009: We checked on this box 5/12/2009 -- still there and still active. Many cool stamps in the book. Poison ivy is just starting to fill in, but easy to access this time of year. Later in the year -- maybe late June to August, watch out for poison ivy, but there is usually a little path through the brush so you can get there anytime with care.

DIRECTIONS: The major construction is done, so these directions should be pretty reliable: From Post Road, follow signs to Lowe's (!!!). Pass Lowe's so it is on your LEFT, and then continue as above past the import cars. The Pipe Yard, as of yesterday, was empty, and I think the pipes may all have found new homes. However, don't be fooled by the retail/industrial clues. Allen's Harbor and Spink's Neck Beach are hidden gems. This box is not a hike, by any means, but, from the box, you can walk a half mile beach, see the harbor and even picnic at a covered picnic table.

PLEASE BE SURE TO CLOSE BOX TOP SECURELY TO KEEP THINGS DRY!
