These boxes salute the football rivalry between Shelton and Derby High Schools, played each year on Thanksgiving Day since 1922. Although the year the rivalry between the schools began is often debated, it is believed to be 1904. It remains one of the oldest continuing high school football rivalries in the nation. The overall standings are Shelton leading the series with 51 wins to Derby’s 43, with 7 ties. And no Shelton football game would be complete without the FINN FANATICS. This is a fan club consisting of Shelton High students who attend all the home games, and who travel on the “fan bus” to away games. The club is named after the Shelton High field, Finn Stadium. They are usually led by a group of fanatical, shirtless males who paint letters on their bodies to spell phrases like “Roll Gaels”. The Finn Fanatics sell their own t-shirts, available through the SHS athletic department. The front of the shirt says FINN FANATICS. The back of the shirt says NOT IN OUR HOUSE with an image of the stamp you will find in Box 3.

The boxes are located in Shelton, on the Turkey Trot Trail, which is on Constitution Blvd North, across from Shelton Intermediate School and the back entrance to Shelton High.

Upon entering trail, which is blazed white, watch for the intersecting blue/white trail on the right. Take this trail—do not continue on the Rec Path. Watch for a tree on your left that contains a double blue blaze as well as a locator sign whose wording has been slightly altered by…someone. Here, you will see a 2-sister tree to your right. Just beyond it is a stone with an overhang on it’s left. Box 1 is here. It is important to re-hide completely so the sign altering people don’t get hold of it. At this point, stay straight on white trail. Just before you come to a fallen sawed tree on either side of the trail, look to your right to see the “power towers” looming above the trail. You should also see another fallen tree near a stone wall. Box 2 is under the tree near the wall. Again, re-hide completely. Follow the trail out to the power lines. After crossing over a footbridge, take the trail to your left. From here, do not take the first trail on your left which is ALT WHITE, but take the second left, the “main” white trail, heading back into the woods. Once in woods, you will see a 2-sister tree on the right that looks like a good home for Pooh and Piglet. Behind it is another 2-sister tree growing over a rock. Look for a stone to the right of this tree with an overhang. Box 3 is here, and you will please re-hide it completely. Continue on this white trail which will bring you to the Rec Path and back to your car. It was snowing while I planted these boxes!
