Bad news, beachcombers. After more than a year of tranquil, undisturbed existence, this box has been reported missing. I'm going to replace it as soon as I can. And if you took the contents, then a pox on you. An especially itchy pox, furthermore.

This is the Double First Box because it's both my first letterbox, and the first letterbox (at least, first letterbox on this site) that's really in the Panhandle. I hope it doesn't stay the only one for long.

This letterbox is located squarely in the middle of Destin. While driving on Highway 98, look out for Beach Drive, which is by the Circle K. If you're going east, it'll be a left turn, and if west, then right.

Drive until you pass the first stop sign. When you begin to see the bay, you're near it. You're headed to Mattie M. Kelly Park, which is just a little picnic type area with a couple of parking lots bookending it. Park in the second lot.

Look around until you see what looks like a wooden footbridge. It's actually a wooden path that winds through the wetlands at the back of the park. It's a lovely walk, but what you're seeking lies under the ramp, under the left side. Look for a flat polygon of cement; it has a secret.

There's no pen in this box, so please bring your own. And please return that cement bit to where you found it.

Enjoy the trail while you're here, and don't forget to walk up the street to see the bay.
