“Going on a Barrett Hunt”

Start the hike at Barrett Preserve in Gales Ferry, CT. Park at the intersection of Long Cove Road and Mount Vernon Road. Cross the street to enter the preserve. After reaching the back of the clearing, the hike starts at the entrance into the woods on the yellow trail. When looking at the woods take the yellow trail to the left.

Uh-oh, a forest – a deep dark forest. Can’t go around it, can’t go over it, oh no we’ve got to go through it, stumble trip stumble trip. Follow the yellow trail as it enters the woods. The trail parallels an old chicken wire fence that is to the left of the trail. Follow the trail as it heads down hill. Stay on the main yellow trail as it turns lefts near the preserve map/sign to enter the West loop trail. If you continued straight you would be on the crossover trail (don’t do this). After turning left you will be passing through countless small trees that give a sense of vertigo as the trail meanders up and down. The trail curves right and begins an extended descent down hill. Continue to follow as the trail goes down.

At the bottom of the hill you will pass over a couple rises. Over the last rise you will observe a construction site/clearing. Uh-oh excavators, yellow excavators. Can’t drive ‘em, can’t run through ‘em. But a good time to watch ‘em move the boulders. Continue on the trail as it curves right.

Soon you will reach a rock wall. Stop at the point before the trail goes through the wall. Follow the rock wall to the right as it continues up an incline. At around 30 feet you will reach a sister/split tree. Look around the rocks in the wall at this location to find the first box.

Continue back on the trail through the rock wall to find box number 2. Stay on the main yellow trail through many little turns. At the next preserve map/sign take a right. The trail continues up hill for some time and reaches another preserve map/sign. Take a left to enter the East Loop trail. Going right/straight will lead you back to the entrance.

You are now entering the spookier part of the woods with gnarled groves of trees. The trail will soon parallel a rock wall that will be on your left. Continue to follow the yellow trail until the trail veers to the right and leaves the company of the rock wall that continues down hill to the thick oozy swamp – no squelch squerch here. Stop where the trail begins to separate from the rock wall. There is a yellow blaze on a boulder right in the middle of the trail at this point. Cross over the rock wall adjacent to the boulder and look for box number two. Congrats you found the Barrett! Hope you go on a Barrett Hunt again.

Continue on the yellow trail to complete the loop and return to the entrance.
