Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 20 yards RT)
Recommended Ink: blue & black
Status: alive
Chuck Hughes was born in 1943 in Philadelphia, but moved to Texas when he was young and attended high school in Abilene where he played football. He received a scholarship to play at Texas Western where he became known as the "Abilene Whippet" because of his lean but fast body. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1967 and played three seasons before being traded to the Detroit Lions. On October 24, 1971 he suffered a fatal heart attack during the final minutes of a game versus the Chicago Bears at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. He was jogging back to the huddle when he collapsed on the Bears' 15-yard line without contact. He is, to date, the only NFL player to die on the field during a game and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park.
Directions:
Going south on Austin Highway (Hwy 368), turn right at Eisenhauer Rd, then immediate right into the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery. Continue through three intersections to the Good Shephard section on the left and turn left at next intersection. Park immediately on left by a hedge.
Clues:
Walk half way down right side of hedge, then turn right (west) and go 15 steps to grave of Chuck Hughes. After paying respects, go back to other side of hedge and sit on stone bench in corner. Reach around behind your right shoulder and look within trunks of bush for minibox under a rock and leaves. Please replace as described and be discreet.
