Zane Grey (January 31, 1872 – October 23, 1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that presented an idealized image of the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book. Payson was his home, and it was while wondering these mountains he called home the ideas for his Novels came to him.
Riders of the Purple Sage is a Western novel by Zane Grey, first published by Harper & Brothers in 1912. Considered by many critics to have played a significant role in shaping the formula of the popular Western genre, the novel has been called "the most popular western novel of all time."
From Payson take highway 260 east about 25 miles. After mile marker 278 watch for trailhead 260 sign across the road on the left. Be careful making the left turn and park in the dirt lot.
Walk past the trail information sign, and take the trail headed right (North).
Walk for around seven minutes, then eventually you'll see two huge (3ft diameter) tree stumps on the left.
Stand on the stump closest to the trail, and walk roughly 350 degrees from Mag North for 24 steps to s small rocky outcropping.
Check on its west side, under SPOR to find the letterbox. There are several other boxes in the area!
