There once was a place called Owl Haven. It was a nature center operated by the NJ Audubon Society. The center featured live animals, mounted specimens and natural history exhibits. In the trails near the center it was possible to view various wildlife species, including birds such as the red-tailed hawk, kestrels, bluebirds, and great horned owls. The center moved out awhile ago to another location and the original building has since fallen into disrepair. There has been talk of another group rehabilitating the structure for another use but that has yet to see any progress.
Some of the owls who lived in the area, dismayed by these events, decided to leave and find a new place to call home. After travelling about 8.5 miles on a bearing of about 142 degrees, they found a new place to settle and established their own Owl Haven.
To visit them at their new home, find the entrance to the small parking lot of their old home. Follow the path that they took and it will get you to their new home, which coincidentally has some things in common with their old place. Their new home has three different parking lots in different areas. If you are in a lot that mentions visitors or nuts, then you are in the wrong place.
Once there, walk over to the trail crossing that you drove over as you entered the parking lot. At that spot follow the trail to the left and not the right. After a short way, take the first marked trail to the right. Follow this trail until you come to a place with a small section of split rail fence on both sides of the trail. Go to the left and take that trail behind the fence. Head down the trail and make your first left. Walk about 25 steps and you will find two pine trees on the left side edge of the trail that are about 25 feet apart. Turn to your left and walk between them in the natural opening closest to the second tree. After only a few steps look to your left and see the long dead tree lying on the ground. The end closest to you is resting against a standing tree. Behind the downed tree at the intersection of living and dead you will find a symbol of Owl Haven. Blue is recommended.
While this area is not as well travelled as some of the others, it still gets some folks now and then, so when you're done please take care to re-hide well and use the forest debris and bark that should have been there when you found it.
When you're ready to go you can either back track the way you came or you can continue down the path the way you were going until you see a bench. At that bench you can either take the trail to the left or the one straight across, as both will lead back to the parking lot in a short time. There are some other paths to explore and see in this place so if you didn't already grab a map at the kiosk by the building at the end of the parking lot, be sure to check it out upon your return. Also, if you have the time, check out what's going on in the building as well. It's a neat place and has the type of environment to make the owls feel right at home.
