This letterbox is located at Ft. Stanton, NM, site of many petroglyphs scattered in the nearby area and along the Rio Bonito. The stamp was carved based on a petroglyph at Three Rivers Petroglyph National Recreation Area, location of 21,400 ancient petroglyphs, near Tularosa, NM. When I was carving the image, I suddenly realized it looked like E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial. All of this southeastern NM area seems home to both UFO sightings and ancient rock art, hence the name: E.T. on the Rocks.

To find the letterbox: Go to Ft. Stanton, located on Hwy 220 just east of the regional airport between Ruidoso and Capitan, NM. From Ruidoso, go north on hwy 48 and east on 220. From Capitan, go east on 380 for 4.25 miles, then south on 220 for 1 mile to Ft. Stanton. Go to the Visitors Center and Museum and park in Visitors Parking.
Clue: From Visitors Parking #2, go up the steps left of the Visitors Parking area. With your back to the Visitors Center, standing above Visitor Parking #2, look across the terraced field, formerly home of tent-camps. Straight ahead, notice the yellow fire hydrant in the middle of the field, and beyond this, a large cedar against the back edge of the terraced field (see photo on AQ). At the base of this cedar, hidden by its large branches, is another stone monument, behind which is the letterbox. Please replace the box carefully and place the rock on top to prevent its dislocation. Be discreet!

Now enjoy visiting Ft. Stanton, and then you will probably want to make your way to Three Rivers Petroglyph Monument to walk among the amazing ancient rock art there. A good hiking trail will take you among many of the petroglyphs. Three Rivers Petroglyph NRA is west of Ruidoso, NM, on Hwy 54 between Carrizizo and Tularosa. Look for E.T. and say hello!
