The Chipmunk's Hideout is hidden along a hiking/snowmobiling trail in the Woodlands neighborhood of Middlebury (near the Middlebury State Airport).

To get to the starting point of the trail, take Route 7 to Cady Road (by Foster Motors). Follow Cady Road to the end. Turn left onto Route 116, and go about .4 miles. Turn right onto Munson Road and go about half a mile to the four-way stop. (You might want to park along Munson near the four-way stop.) Go straight onto Burnham Drive, and up a little rise. You’ll start to be able to see the trail on your left, running along Burnham Drive. Step onto the trail wherever you find an opening.

Continue along the trail, which will turn left and head into the woods. (Part of it is shared with a residential driveway.) A short way in (maybe around half a mile), you will come to a wooden bridge over a stream. About one step before you get to the far end of the bridge, turn toward your right. Then, in the words of my 8-year-old daughter, “Take 5 large strides until you get to the first tree. Then you will see two more trees on your left. There is one more tree close to the river. It has many rocks covering its roots. Under one rock you will find A Chipmunk's Hideout.”

The particular rock to look under is a thin, flat slab standing on its end (almost like a tombstone) and leaning against some other rocks.

Happy hunting!
