Old Bridge/Young America
This would be an ideal letterbox to pursue on a bicycle, as it is located on the Eisenbahn trail just north of West Bend. The Eisenbahn is part of Wisconsin’s Rails to Trails system; it used to be the rail corridor going through West Bend and on north through Kewaskum, Campbellsport, and Eden.
If you start your quest at the southern terminus of the Eisenbahn Trail at Rusco Drive on the south side of West Bend, the trail distance will be 5.1 miles one-way. If you would rather hike the journey on foot, parking is available on and near Barton Avenue (highway 144) near where the Eisenbahn Trail crosses it at the north end of West Bend. The distance to the letterbox from that point is about 1.5 mile round trip depending on where you park.
Traveling north on the Eisenbahn Trail as it heads out of West Bend you will soon cross a bridge, once a train trestle, that would carry trains over the small village of Young America that is immediately north of West Bend. Young America, like many other small villages throughout Wisconsin, has a very interesting history to explore and read-up on. You can still find the old mill and steel frame bridge in the town if you wish to explore it. As you cross the bridge, you can see Young America along the banks of the Milwaukee River.
Continuing north on the Eisenbahn after crossing the river, the old bridge that crosses over the Eisenbahn Trail will start coming into view. This bridge carried car traffic over the rail tracks that the Eisenbahn used to be. As you pass beneath the old bridge, if you stop beneath it and turn to your right, you will see several rocks on the other side of one of the support beams that lies horizontally on the hillside next to the trail about 5 ½ feet off the ground. “Old Bridge/Young America” is located under the stones!
On nice days the trail can have occasional bicycle and foot traffic so be somewhat discreet when stamping-up and re-stashing the letterbox. Thank-you!
