Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, 1 mile RT)
Status: alive
Climax Canyon Park offers a several mile multi-loop nature trail with breathtaking views of Raton and the surrounding landscape. It is named after an abandoned coal mine and located at the end of Apache Avenue just blocks from downtown Raton.
Directions:
From S. 2nd Street go west on Apache Ave to its end at Climax Canyon Park gate and park near it on side of road.
Clues:
Walk around gate and up dirt road about 200 yards to Climax Canyon Nature Trail sign. Follow trail as it climbs along side of mountain to jct with East Loop Trail. Go right 10 steps then left uphill 15 steps to first pine tree, then continue 3 more steps to next pine tree. Minibox is at back base of second pine tree under a rock and needles.
Hike length: 1 mile
