Peter S. Beagle wrote the book, The Last Unicorn, which was later adapted into a lovely animated movie and a beautiful graphic novel. JK’s carving of the Unicorn is based on her appearance in the graphic novel, which we both encourage you to read as part of your quest.

Make your way to Machimoodus State Park. The Unicorn should be just a quick walk, but be sure to do some research before you set out. There are lots of stamps to find here!

Park your car and head to the northern corner of the parking lot. If you don’t have a compass, this is the side of the lot opposite the park rules sign. There will be a row of 10 rocks heading north, beginning at the end of the log rail.

Sit on the 2nd rock in the row. It’s a flat rock, propped up on a cement block. Sit directly above the cement block and look straight ahead.

You will see a solitary oak, between a clump of trees on the left and a deeper forest on the right. Walk to the oak tree. Enjoy the view of the small pond ahead, and take a reading of 005 degrees, almost directly north, from the tree. Without a compass, this is almost a straight line to the right of the oak as you face the pond.

You will see a large, multi-branched, ancient maple tree, a little apart from a bank of firs in the more forested area, down a slight slope from the edge of the meadow that you crossed.

Below this massive tree, on the north side, about three feet from the trunk is a collection of rocks. The Unicorn is under these rocks. Please re-hide well.
