At one time or another, most of the bird species of North America have claimed the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center for a permanent or temporary domain. So it is no wonder that since December 1997, Matagorda has been No. 1 in North America in the Audubon Society's Annual Christmas Bird Count, earning it the nickname "Super Bowl of the Christmas Bird Count". The bird count is done about 16 days each year around Christmas all over the world, and on December 19, 2002, 243 species were counted here, the greatest number ever recorded. The Center spans 34 acres along the Colorado River and contains six gardens of habitat designed to attract local and migrating birds, butterflies and nature tourists. Entry is $3 per person or $5 per car and hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.

Directions:
Bay City is about 80 miles southwest of Houston via Hwy 59 and south on TX 60. The Matagorda County Birding Nature Center is on TX 35 about 1.7 miles west of Bay City and next to LeTulle Park. Pay at the entrance kiosk and get a map, then park in the dirt lot.

Clues:
From the parking lot head southeast down the service road toward the Observation Deck and Pier. You will pass the Hummingbird Garden, then the Outdoor Education Center, and then some metal silos on the left. From the top of the highest deck (with names engraved on the floor) admire the view of the Colorado River, then head to the rail nearest the name "Custom Auto Refinishers" and go down the steps. The silos will be on your left but you walk right about 7 steps to the corner of the deck. Go under the deck and reach up and around the support post for the microbox. Please re-hide well.
