Location: The park where you will get a “Grand View” of the “not old” river amidst mountain glory.
Terrain: Rocky trail at base of rock faces for half the journey. Use caution if children are along since there are some steep drop-offs along the trail.
Distance: ~1 mile roundtrip
Park in the lot near the Visitor Center. From the kiosk head down the flagstone paved path to the Main Overlook. After taking in the view go back to the intersection with the C. Rock trail on the right (north).
You’ll travel over many rocks and have great views of towering rock walls on your left. Watch your footing since some areas have a steep slope on your right. After nearly a half mile you'll get another great view of the “equine footwear” Bend of the “not old” River. Just after the view, you'll make your own hairpin turn. Counting 97 steps, you'll follow the rock face southwest and then more northerly. Pass a tall tree that touches the trail on the right and then stop at a large rock on the ground on the left that is pointing at the trail. This rock is shortly before a grouping of 4 trees on the right. To the left of the pointing rock is a long mossy rock and a flat-topped rock that is about 1.5' by 2'. Your Mountain Glory is hiding in the south crevice where these 2 rocks meet. It is covered by a smaller rock and leaves. Please check to be sure no other hikers see you retrieve or replace the box.
To complete your hike, continue forward and ascend to the intersection with another trail. Turn left to take this wider and gentler trail back to the parking lot. Be sure to stop for more fabulous views from the overlook spots on your way back.
We live quite far away, so would really appreciate an email to let us know how the box is doing.
