No, this is not a stamp commemorating Paul Bunyan’s big blue ox Babe (how’s that for alliteration). If you know anything about Logan, home to Utah State University, you may already be familiar with their mascot, Big Blue. As you can see, if you drive along main street, there are several bull statues painted with various designs. You may even see these bulls wearing tutus every now and then. Our favorite is the dare devil bull riding a motorcycle on 200 N. If you have time, stop by and take some pictures there as well.

Even if you are familiar with the Aggie’s mascot, you may not be familiar with its history:

“Originally Big Blue was a real white bull painted blue before each game. When the Spectrum was first built, however, there was concern that Big Blue would scuff up the new basketball court, so Big Blue was donned with red rubber boots; this was a disaster. Because of the damage done to the football field and the basketball court Big Blue was discontinued.

In 1987 Big Blue got a second life when Student Athletics Vice President John Mortensen decided that Utah State should still have a mascot and spent $750 on a costume for Big Blue. The costume was somewhat of a disappointment because it was royal blue, not navy, had real animal horns, and was not easy to move around in. Big Blue took another backseat for two seasons until 1989 when a student pestered the cheerleading advisor to let him be the mascot. Big Blue was the name and since then there have been six Big Blues, four of which have gone on to become professional mascots and all of which remain anonymous.”

So have fun and enjoy Big Blue’s stamp!

From Main street in Logan turn east onto 1000 N.
Head east until you come to the light at 800 E.
From here you will want to find a place to park, there are parking lots that may be parked in during certain hours without a permit. Avoid weekdays as these parking lots are crowded with USU students and teachers. Weekends are best. Once you are parked, head to the southeast corner of the light where you should find a set of stairs and a bronze Bull Statue. Now the fun begins.

Stand in front of bull and count the number of letters in the 3rd word on the cement pedestal the bull is standing on. Remember this number, you will need it later.
Go down the stairs to the corner, stand by the traffic light pole.
Walk east up the sidewalk to the second set of stairs on your right. A little further up the sidewalk you should see a sign post holding 3 different signs on one sign post (yellow, diamond, platinum).
Cross the street straight north, watch out for cars. If you wish, you may walk back down to the light and cross at the crosswalk. Once on the other side, look for the 3 sign post to orient yourself.
Walk uphill (north) toward the Romney Stadium. You should pass two short lightposts. At the top of the hill in front of the stadium, find the sign that says: “James and Norma Bennett.” Then walk to the left and pass the sign that says: “Carl and Mary Sue Lundahl.”
Continuing to the left you should come to a narrow paved hill that leads down to a parking lot. From the corner fence post, count fence posts down the hill using the number you obtained earlier at the Bull Statue (Do not count the fence poles that come to a point at the top, but rather the larger fence posts that hold the fence up).
Once you have counted the fence posts, turn to the west. You should see a multi-trunked tree just over the curb. On the west side in the roots behind some rocks you’ll find what you seek.

Please make sure to seal all of the bags and the box before returning it to its hiding place. Re-hide well!
