(11/11/04 - the yellow jackets are gone so the box has been placed back in it's original location. As always, check for any 'varmints' before retrieving the box).
(3/07 - a recent fire where the long boats are stacked can be skirted. This box is still 'findable'.)

Lake Wheeler park is southeast of downtown Raleigh. From the I40/440 beltline take the Lake Wheeler Road exit (297). Go south, away from, Raleigh for about six miles. After passing horse & cow pastures, the Yates Mill Pond, when the road curves hard right and the speed limit slows to 35 mph watch for the brown sign on the right that tells you where to find the park entrance.

Enter the park and follow the road all the way to the last parking lot near the lake. You'll see a community building and playground for the kids and boat launching ramps.

With the lake to your left, walk past the launch area (watch out for trucks and boats!). Look for a path that the fishermen use. Stay on the path that follows the shore line. Eventually you'll come across the launch area for the local rowing club. There are scullers and other paddle boats stacked up and ready for rowing.

Further on down the path you will notice a two-level structure sitting in the water. There is a bridge to the structure but MIND THE NO TRESPASSING sign (actually it's been removed because the flooring of the structure has been replaced).

Leading to that structure, if you look hard enough, you will find "Jim's mark". Once you've found it, put Jim 'behind' you and look for "a tree in a 'V'". From THAT TREE look to the left (about 11 o'clock) for a tree with 2 sets of blue and white dots (the tree also looks like it's been scorched). Behind it you will see a fallen pine tree. In the hole where the tree's roots once were you'll find Jim's Lost Boat in a protective bag under pine needles and leaves.

Be mindful of bugs, snakes and yellow jackets before you go poking about. Hide the letterbox well for the next adverturer. Don't forget to log on your find this site!
