Carved and placed by Nightowl.

Take Route 6 to Exit 9 (Route 134) going North. Take it to Route 6A and turn right. Go 2.5 miles to the Museum of Natural History. Park in the lot.

Pass the tile “Animals of Stonybrook Valley” and the humpback jawbone. Turn left at the carved wooden whale across from the entrance to the museum. This will take you to the Wing Trail.

Note the warnings at the start of this trail. You don’t want to be stuck out on the island at high tide or you will wish you could sprout wings. The path is a boardwalk but it isn’t a raised boardwalk. The boards are there to merely keep you from sinking into the muck. they aren’t raised above the tidal waters.

Cross the boards to the island. Take the first right passing the sign “Wing Memorial”. About twenty steps you will see a memorial stone to John Wing (the brother of an ancestor of mine). Say hello to my distant relatives and then proceed down the trail.

You will pass under an arboreal tunnel. The underbrush on both sides of the path will become very thick. The path makes a sharp left turn and the marsh may be visible on your right. You will soon enter a woodsy area of mostly pines. When you pass the tree that grows out from the middle of the path, with low branches jutting off to the left blocking that side of the trail, you are close. In approximately 15 steps there will be a small clearing on your left with a couple of oaks in it. To the left of the larger oak you will see a double tree with some tell tale sticks and bark at its base. Welcome to Wing Island.

You can retrace your steps or explore the island by proceeding down the path you were going. If you branch off one of the trails to your left you can find a trail to the beach. It is a fun island to explore. The museum is seasonal with a very nice nature center. There are many hands on exhibits for children. There is an entrance fee for the museum. Summer 2005 reports lots of poison ivy on the island. Take care. Bring your own stamp pad.
