Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

On July 24, 1857 under this historic oak, Senator Sam Houston made one of his more than 60 campaign addresses in an unsuccessful gubernatorial race against Hardin R. Runnels. When the settlers learned that the famous Texas general was coming, great plans were made to welcome him and a number of young ladies in the community pooled their talents and made a Texas flag. Before the senator began his speech they presented it to their hero, and when he had finished his address, Houston went into the crowd and kissed each of them to show his appreciation. From then on this tree became known as the Kissing Oak.

Directions:
From Hwy 35 go west on University Drive about 1.5 miles to CM Allen Pkwy, continue straight on it for 1 block and turn left then left again into small parking lot next to lot for River Lodge office of Texas State University.

Clues:
Walk north through parking lot past River Lodge office to tree on right side of old Boy Scout stone house, which is the Kissing Oak. To find the LB, walk around left side of house to back corner where small tree is growing next to back of house. LB is between tree and house under rocks. Please replace as described and be discreet.
