Difficulty: Gently rolling terrain; about 15 minutes each way.

Mandatory florescent orange required October through end of February. Observe all local & posted regulations. Take proper precautions against disease carrying deer ticks and poison ivy.

Background: The North South Trail (NST) runs 77 miles from the Rhode Island's southern shore at the Atlantic Ocean in Charlestown to its northern border at the Massachusetts line in Burrillville. The North South Trail was proposed over three decades ago by George Ernst, a hiker from Cranston. He suggested building new trails and
connecting them together with already existing hiking trials to create a long path across the state. The state of RI studied the idea in 1978 but the trail wasn't actually built until 1991. The North South Trail letterbox series is a series of letterboxes placed along various points on the trail to celebrate this achievement. Each stamp contains a common image that represents the NST as well as an image unique to the stamp's location.

The North South Trail – Oceanside , the third letterbox in this series, is placed close to the beginning of the trail in Charlestown. The first 1 3/4 miles of the trail is along roads. This letterbox is placed shortly after the N-S trail enters into woods in Burlingame State Park.

Driving Directions: Take Burlingame Camping Area exit off of Rt. 1 in Charlestown. Turn right onto Klondike Rd. Note: Do not park on Klondike Rd; the entire road is posted NO PARKING and the police do take notice (I know from personal experience.) Drive approximately 3/4 mile to a short dirt turn off on the right side of road between telephone poles # 51 and 50. There is room for one car to park here. Do not block gate or entrance to gravel pit.

Clues: Follow an inconspicuous footpath that begins at the end of the parking space. Travel to the left of the stone wall heading east. The North South trail is about 100’ ahead. Turn left onto the N-S trail to climb a ridge. Turn right at the T. After you go down a hill, continue on N-S trail as the trail turns to the right. After a few minutes you will notice the crumbled remains of a stone wall on the left side of the trail. Walking alone the left side of this wall, follow the stone wall due north until the wall comes to a T with another stone wall (in much better condition than the first.) The box is hidden behind the 2 sister tree against the stone wall. Retrace your route back to your car.
