Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

In the winter of 1834, Anson Jones, who was to become the first Grand Master of Texas Masonic lodges and later the third president of the Republic of Texas, met with five other Masons and took measures to establish a Lodge of their order in Texas. The meeting was held under this live oak and it became known as the Masonic Oak.

Directions:
From Hwy 59 go south on TX 36 to Brazoria, turn left on Pleasant Street and go 0.1 mile to the Masonic Oak on right just left of historic marker and across from Masonic Oak Park. For the letterbox, continue east on Pleasant St about 0.1 mile, turn right on Velasco St about 0.2 mile, then left on China St 0.1 mi to Old Brazoria Cemetery on left.

Clues:
Enter gate of cemetery and go 15 steps, turn left and go 28 steps to historic marker for Don Carlos Barrett. Go right 6 steps and sit on front step of Beacroft tomb between bushes. Lean right and look over corner of step behind bush for letterbox under a brick and leaves.
