As the last chapter of the Hobbit movies comes to the theaters, I wonder what Tolkien would have thought of the films that have brought his book to life? I have to say the movies have brought the book to life more for me, and in this case, I was happy to see the movies before reading the Book!

Unlike many a Hobbit, I am always up for an adventure, especially a letterboxing one- so in honor of “the Hobbit: the Battle of the FIVE Armies” here is one!

To begin your Adventure you may need to consult a map after you have translated the name of the location to begin your Journey:

When you get to your destination park in the lot and look to the west, you will see the trail to begin your journey. As you start, the trail will turn south, then west, then south again. As you continue on, you will come to a crossroads, a smaller path on the left marked by a brown post, or another trail to your right. Ignoring them both, continue south deeper into the forest. To your left you spy a large tower looming in the distance with markings of the city it dwells in. The trail will begin to zig-zag to the right and to the right again, then down you go - be ever on the lookout, you never know what might be lurking behind the stumps and fallen trees in this part of the forest - Orcs? Trolls? You pass a large flat silver colored rock on your left, and then another large boulder, again on your left. Then you will come to a sign, the arrow will lead you as you continue your journey. Finally a place to rest on your right, now might be a good time to have your second breakfast, or maybe your third, before you cross the bridge. After the bridge you will pass a very large fallen tree on your right and a broken tower on your left, keep following the trail, again being ever vigilant! A slight turn to the right and a small downhill, and again you see a sign telling you to follow the path to the right. You are leaving the forest now for a more open area and will cross over a creek and head north to follow eight green sentinels on your left who will keep you on your way. Again a sign will direct you, back into the woods- keep alert! You will notice a large five-armed tree on your right and an old fallen one parallel to the trail on your left. As you continue on, the path will become very straight and long heading east, you may wish for Hobbit feet! Take caution, the path may be very slippery with ice in the winter, or muddy in the warmer weather, walking to the side of the trail may help. Not far ahead on the right is another chance for a bite or to sit and rest your Hobbit feet. As you sit and listen to the stream on your left, you may feel drawn to it, as you follow the small ravine to the large rocks by the stream you notice a small path on your right, follow it, with the stream on your left. Very quickly you will see a large Rock in front of you and a five-foot high stump in the distance behind it. Stop at the rock, you look to notice the green moss covered limbs around you, reminiscent of the green of the Shire- a perfect place for a Hobbit to hide! The Hobbit you seek is hiding at 340 degrees in the stump end of a mossy fallen log under rocks and bark. After meeting him, return to the bench and continue East on the trail, again taking caution as you finish your journey, the path may be straight but can still be treacherous! At the end of this long stretch of path you will come to a T, now turn to the left and follow the winding trail back to your starting point. Hope you had an unexpected and pleasant Journey!
