NOTE from a 2019 finder: Box 1: Very overgrown. Check every bush! Box 2: Exactly right on. Box 3: More steps needed for me. Box 4: Very overgrown. Check every bush! Box 5: The building is gone. Find the Y tree and spiky stump; go from there. Box 6: It took me a couple trips into the woods to find the right combo. There is more than 1 option. Try them all. Box 7: Very overgrown. The fencepost has fallen. Box 8: Not much of a clearing anymore.

Location: nuohlaC kraP - park in the main (north) parking lot
Distance: ~1.25 miles
Terrain: Mostly dirt trail up & around & down a small hill. If snowy or icy, a trekking pole may be helpful.

To encourage people to get out for a bit of lettterboxing during the winter, we planted a series of 8 boxes on a short hike. Only the last box has a logbook. The boxes are all hanging via wire at least one foot off the ground, so they should be findable even if there is snow. If possible, please use leaves or other debris to better disguise them from muggles after you stamp in. If there is snow, make some extra tracks near the boxes so other people don’t follow your trail directly to the box.

If there is snow, you might want to bring a sled, saucer or toboggan along since there are two sledding areas in the park.

On the Rocks
This series features an adventurous group of ice cubes. As the story begins, some of them are in peril. To find them, follow the asphalt path to the east, around the building and over the bridge. Be sure to admire the ice as you cross the bridge! When you get to the center of the shelter, notice the trail sign pointing south. Up you go! Stop at the base of the steps, and then take 20 steps on a bearing of 40°. The box is hanging in a bush between a single & a double.

Rescue
Return to the trail and continue up the steps to see how these cubes will be rescued. Cross the sledding area to the gate at the top. Just past the gate, take the trail at 200°. Watch for a rock wall on the left. From the start of the wall, take 25 steps. Stop and then take a bearing of 280°. Take 10 steps in this direction to the base of a fallen tree where you will find the box.

Escape
Return to the trail and continue onward to discover what happens next. When you reach a “T”, take a right and count 94 steps. If there isn’t too much snow, you should see a white rock on the right. From here, take 20 steps on a bearing of 200°. The box is suspended behind the leaning tree.

Whee!
Go back to the trail “T” and head east to see what the intrepid cubes did after their escape. Continue until you reach a bench. From the center of the bench, take a bearing of 120°. Take 20 steps in this direction to find the box hanging from a bush.

Ice on Ice
To spot them on their next adventure, go back to the trail and continue until another bench. Take the deer path behind the bench and head toward the back corner of a large white building. Near the edge of the woods you should see a large broken “Y” tree with a spiky stump nearby. From the stump, look on a bearing of 130°. The box is hanging between two trees, behind some bark.

Ice Sculpture
Return to the bench and continue along the trail to see what they got up to next. As you reach the midpoint of a gradual curve, watch for a larger tree with a skinny light gray tree near it on the right side of the trail. Head in on the right for about 25 steps to a tall hollow “pointer” tree. From this tree, take 16 steps on a bearing of 150°. The box is behind the skinny standing tree amidst a jumble of fallen pieces.

ICEE treats
After all their adventures, they were ready for a treat. Return to the main trail and continue on. You’ll travel through a zig-zag section. After that, watch for a thicket of trees on the right. Spot the leaning woodpecker tree and walk about 10 steps in towards it. The box is hanging from a fence post near the tree.

The End
All good things must come to an end, so continue on the trail until you notice a bit of a clearing or opening on the right. Walk in about 33 steps, angling on a bearing of 320° to a tall quintuplet. The final box hangs in their center.

Return to the main trail until you reach the shelter. Cross the bridge to return to your vehicle.

We hope you enjoyed our winter series. We’d love to hear about YOUR adventures in finding the boxes, so please send us an email to let us know how you did!
