Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

While he was president, Lyndon Johnson liked to conduct business at his Ranch House so much that it became known as the Texas White House. He liked to have his staff meetings around a long table under this stately live oak in the front yard and discuss the issues of the day. Thus it became known as the Cabinet Oak, and since the Johnsons donated the Texas White House to the National Park Service in 1972, it can be viewed by everyone. The letterbox can be found nearby.

Directions:
Go east on Hwy 290 from Stonewall a few miles to LBJ NHP on the left and park by the visitor center.

Clues:
Get a free pass and map then drive to the Texas White House to see the tree in front of it. For the letterbox, go back to the visitor center and walk past it on gravel path heading northeast toward the Living History Farm. At the stone marker sign describing ball moss, go right off trail 20 steps to large oak tree at edge of creek. Look on left back side about 5 feet high in crevice for letterbox against concrete support under a rock. Please replace as described and be discreet.
