Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

Early in March 1836, Mexican General Urrea approached to within sight of Refugio Mission, set up headquarters near these live oak trees, and made preparations to take the town. He eventually did, and most of the Texans that escaped the Mission were captured and massacred at Goliad. These trees became known as the Urrea Oaks and can be seen near Oakwood Cemetery, where this letterbox can be found.

Directions:
From Refugio go southwest on US 77 about 1 mile to see the Urrea Oaks on the left. For the letterbox, continue southwest on US 77 about 0.7 mile to Suntide Rd and turn left. Go about 0.4 mile to Oakwood Cemetery Rd and turn left, then right into middle entrance of Oakwood Cemetery. Drive to back of cemetery and park by La QueY grave on the right.

Clues:
Walk left away from grave about 20 steps to clump of trees. LB is within under sticks and leaves.
