A tall Texan known for his fastball, Joe Williams was one of the most feared Negro league pitchers of the early 20th century. Born in Seguin in 1886, Joe began playing professional baseball in 1905 and by 1911 was playing for the Lincoln Giants of New York. He acquired his first nickname of "Cyclone" at this time, but when he joined the Homestead Grays in the 1920s he became known as "Smokey" Joe. One of his most amazing accomplishments came in 1930 when he struck out 27 Kansas City Monarchs in a 1-0, 12-inning victory. He died in 1951 and was elected into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1999. Today there is a baseball field named after him in Seguin, and it is near Max Starcke Park, where this letterbox can be found.

Directions:
From I10 go south on Hwy 123 for about 3 miles, passing Smokey Joe Williams Field on the right, to exit for Max Starcke Park on right. Go right into the park past the golf course clubhouse and bending left, then go right on River Drive to its end and park by covered picnic tables.

Clues:
Walk to NW corner toward river to a large tree 5 steps beyond white posts with cable. Go around to downhill side and look left of the huge cavity for LB nestled in smaller cavity by root under a rock and leaves.
