Difficulty: Easy
Distance to Letterbox: 100 yards
Here is the history of Dr. Smythe for the Texas Online History:
(1824-1889) Pioneer Lockhart physician, from Alabama. Studied medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Was Civil War surgeon, Texas Mounted Rifles and Cavalry, on Texas frontier and in Louisiana, Arkansas and Indian Territory. Typical of Texas Confederates, his letters home show concern for wife and children: contain instructions on teaching child to read, crops, plowing, animal care, fences, debt collection. Professor of chemistry, 1871, Galveston Medical college. A&M College physician, 1879-82. First to serve full time in any Texas college or university.
Directions:
Historical Marker is along Hwy 183, but could not find in location that was given. After hiding the box in location below, I believe I saw a roadside park farther down Hwy 183 that may have the marker. For box, use this. Traveling toward Lockhart on Hwy 183 (not toll road), after you pass FM 1185, start looking for turn to the right on Rolling Ridge Road. Turn right and follow it for about 4 miles until you reach Polonia Cemetery on your left. Park at gate.
To the Letterbox:
Enter gate and go to Historical Marker for Cemetery. Facing it, go behind and straight back past large cross with kneeling bench, to the back fence. Find the concrete block with iron topping. Box is behind that block under rock pile.
