We are fortunate again this year, to be able to witness two Total Lunar “Blood Moon” Eclipses. There is something eerily beautiful about seeing them, so forget all the superstition and enjoy the view! But if you want to see this first one on April 4th, you will have to be quick- they say it may last only be viewable for five minutes!

Hopefully this box will be around a lot longer!

A Note Before you begin: You will need to use colored markers or inkpads for this box- Black, Red, Orange, and Brown- the Stamp will have the best effect using these colors.

To Find the starting location of this box, you need to know the name of a Waukesha County park that has the first four letters of the second word of the name of this Box in the first five letters of it’s name – Good Luck!

As you enter the park, just past the entrance gate is a parking lot on your right. Find a spot to park your vehicle and make your way to the South End of the parking lot to find the wooden trail map (and pick up a map if you did not get one at the entrance). You will be hiking the trail that is the color of the Moon you are looking for. From the map, take a compass reading of 130 degrees; you should spot the trail markers where you need to begin. As you walk toward the trail markers you will notice a tree in between the two markers, facing the tree- take the trail at 100 degrees.

Quickly cross the pavement and continue to follow your trail, the banded brown trail markers will be your guides. As you go along, watch out for your opportunity to “Shoot the Moon” on your right! At the next intersection, follow the posts and do what’s RIGHT. You will need to get your blood pumping, so ignore the side trails; the hill ahead should start to do the trick! After your climb, keep the course, and continue straight and you will be met with crossing the pavement again. Carefully cross and turn to your left, following the tree line until you come to another wooden trail map (ignoring the chance to stay on your current path to the right!). Time to leave the blood trail! Turning to your left from the map you will see a decision before you, facing the tree in the middle of your decision, again take the path at 100 degrees. As you follow along, the path will start to incline, at the top you will see an opening up ahead- this may be a good spot to view the moon! As you enter the clearing, you realize you are still a little too low for a good view- you need to get to higher ground! Turn Right and follow close to the tree line, just past the large iron tower, on your left you will see another brown two- banded post- Stop and enjoy the view- this might be the spot where you could get the best view of the Moon!

As you look around, you may start to feel the PULL of the Moon calling you- from the post take a bearing of 320 degrees and head toward the woods. You should see a large rock opening up to a small foot path- follow the trail into the woods. As you follow you will start down a small hill. About two thirds of the way down, you will come to a large rock next to the trail on the right. From the rock, take 13 steps forward. Take a bearing of 40 degrees and walk 10 steps to a fallen log- at the Northeast end of the log; what you seek is hidden inside, behind a rather LARGE mossy guard!

To find your way back, continue on the foot path through the woods, stepping over two last logs before you join back up with a main trail. Turn Left and follow the trail until you are back at the intersection with the wooden trail map- follow your original trail (or follow the road) back to your vehicle.

Hope you were able to view this first Blood Moon, and enjoyed your hike!

And Stay Tuned…..the second “HALF” of this box will be coming on the second Blood Moon of 2015!

Box updates appreciated- Thanks!
